The course is designed for Nursing Home professionals who need to attend to potentially aggressive family members and persons who cause harm, in the context of vulnerable adult protection. Learners will learn frameworks and strategies to prepare themselves for engaging potentially aggressive individuals, as well as de-escalate them. Learners will also learn about the importance of self-care and strategies to self-care in the management of challenging behaviours.

Prevailing course fee subsidy at 90% for Singaporeans/PRs and 45% for foreign staff working in eligible CCOs.

COURSE OBJECTIVE

At the end of the training, learners will be able to:

  • List signs of escalation.
  • Explain the behavioural change stairway.
  • Apply verbal and non-verbal communication skills to manage challenging behaviours from vulnerable adult’s family members.
  • Demonstrate approaches in managing challenging behaviours.
  • Apply self-care strategies to address burnout, secondary traumatic stress and vicarious trauma.

COURSE OUTLINE (1.5 days)
  • Provides foundation knowledge how to identify challenging behaviour and the verbal, non-verbal phases of escalation.
  • Equip learners with knowledge of the 5 steps to affecting behaviour change: use active listening and express empathy to build rapport to influence an individual’s behavioural change.
  • Provides knowledge on the use of effective verbal and non-verbal communications skills to manage challenging behaviours from family members.
  • Provides learners with approaches to manage challenging behaviours.
  • Provides learners with self-care techniques to manage burnout and vicarious trauma.
